In the current climate of worldwide insecurity, there is an equally global trend of increased awareness concerning the security and protection of critical infrastructures. As a result, it has come to be expected – and in many cases, mandated – that a certain category of buildings, institutions and sites with economic and/or societal importance must offer a meaningful level of security and protection. Protection against terrorism and other malicious attacks is just one element of a critical protection programme; the potential impact of natural and accidental hazards may be included as well.
